Term 2 started with a flurry of activities and important ceremonies. The very first day back began with an appropriately respectful High School ANZAC service, with all the associated dignitaries in attendance. This was followed by the whole High School lining up on Cresswell Road to pay their respects to the funeral procession of Rabbi Coleman, on its way to PHC. Mr Lawrence spoke of how Rabbi Coleman learnt something new every day. That this continued for 106 years was certainly food for thought – I can only imagine the depth of knowledge he had developed over that time and how lucky so many people were to be able to learn from him.

Our afternoon Yom Hashoah commemoration was another meaningful service in the Hall and the Year 10 students involved read beautifully and thoughtfully. Our wonderful Tzevet put together a most professional and educational exhibition for Yom Hazikaron in the JHUB. The students’ reactions were respectful and thoughtful and many were clearly touched by the fantastic displays. It was the boots in the empty bedroom that affected me most – I am confident that all parents present were imagining how they would feel if they knew their son or daughter would not be returning home.

Yom Ha’atzmaut provided a day of joy for the whole school community. I am at last getting used to the idea of having sad days and joyful days in such close proximity. Reflecting on the week, it was clear that commemorating such a range of important events made for a thought-provoking experience; it was a salutary reminder of significant loss as well as of hope for the future. I am reminded of the importance of hope every time we sing Hatikvah together. At É«ÇéÂÛ̳ we continue to emphasise hope for the future at every opportunity, mindful of its importance for the wellbeing of our young people.
